Located in Saint Elizabeth, this is Jamaica’s only river where you can boat for as long as 3 miles uninterrupted. The river owes its curious name to the decomposing vegetation around it.

The safari boat tour sails peacefully past lush jungle cover, old-growth trees. Along the way you’ll spot tons of fish, birds, and crabs.

Look out for local fishermen wading through crocodile-filled waters with their little crab traps, and make sure to get photos of the American Crocodile.

This ancient creature is a vulnerable species and a big draw for nature lovers.

8. A Night Swim at Luminous Lagoon

Also known as Glistening Waters, this lagoon located in Trelawny is one of the top four spots in the world to see bioluminescent plankton.

It’s no wonder that scientists from across the world arrive here to witness this strange phenomenon.

While the lagoon resembles any other beach during the daytime, once night falls, these glowing microorganisms put on a visual feast for the senses.

As soon as you jump in and splash around, you will notice the waters turn into an eerie luminescent blue.

Best to have a high-quality camera to capture these moments. Once you’re done, head to the Glistening Waters Restaurant and enjoy shrimp and lobster dishes and a blended fruit drink.

7. Cliff Jumping in Negril

Admittedly cliff jumping is not for the faint of heart but if you come to Rick’s Cafe in Negril on the West Coast, you will be in fine company as tons of newbies line up to take a leap of faith into the turquoise blue waters.

Once your feet have left the edge of the cliff, you might see your life play back in a flash!

Enjoy the splash and don’t be surprised to find yourself surrounded by curious marine creatures.

Tip: Stay back for an exceptional sundown at Rick’s Cafe as they have local bands belting out reggae music and Bob Marley covers. Read our complete Negril guide here.

Not to be missed on this list is a scuba diving adventure.

Jamaica has over 100 diving sites across Negril, Ocho Rios, Kingston, Montego Bay, and Port Antonio, all top coastal towns.

The dive site at Kingston will lead you to the ruins of an ancient submerged city called Port Royal – it was pushed underwater because of a killer earthquake in the 1600s.

For something completely different, try the marine-protected waters around Montego Bay.

You will encounter many beautiful caverns and arches, along with peaceful marine creatures.

For a close-up encounter with nurse sharks and lobsters, head straight to the SS Catherine shipwreck dive in Ocho Rios.

5. Snorkeling on Jamaica’s South Coast

While most visitors end up snorkeling at popular spots like Negril, Seven Mile Beach, and the Ocho Rios area, we strongly recommend heading to the more laidback South Coast to Blue Fields Beach.

You can snorkel directly from the shore, and once you’re done make sure to try local seafood delicacies and jerk chicken at the vendors nearby.

Tip: Invest in a GoPro camera and capture footage of the amazing butterfly fish, parrot fish, squirrel fish, and eagle rays.

You probably won’t encounter such a wealth of marine life in any other snorkeling spot.

4. Horseback Riding on a Beach and through Old Estates

Saddle up for an exhilarating horseback ride through Jamaica’s landscapes.

Depending on the tour you choose, you could find yourself galloping through colonial-era estates where the island expert guide will point out the history of the settlements and plantations.

Make sure to choose a tour where you will get to experience riding a horse through the warm Caribbean waters.

The animals are well-trained and very intuitive so you won’t need to worry about a thing.

Tip: Make sure to bring along an extra set of clothes, swimwear, and towels as this is a wet tour. Closed-toe shoes are recommended.

3. Jungle Fun at Dunn’s River Falls

Located in the Ocho Rios region of Jamaica, these world-famous falls often feature on posters and brochures.

The falls cascade down a whopping 960 feet before they finish into crystal clear pools where you can chill out and contemplate the meaning of Life.

While it is possible to visit alone, a guide will help you navigate the steep staircases and slippery rocks which can be a little tricky.

Consider hiking to the top of the falls and doing the zip line from there.

You will be hundreds of feet up in the air looking down at the climbers making their ascent up the falls. Here is a handy link to Jamaica’s top waterfalls.

2. Outstanding Beauty at the Blue Mountain Peak Hike

Once you’re in Jamaica, you might try the famous Blue Mountain coffee.

Now it’s time to summit the peak of this iconic mountain located in the eastern part of the island.

Part of the Blue and John Crow Mountains National Park, the peak sits at 2256m and hikers are rewarded with unsurpassed views of the seas, surrounding valleys, and even Kingston town.

The rainforest canopy and blue ridges are a photographer’s delight.

Tip: Take a guided hike that leaves in the middle of the night so you can make it in time for sunrise, and make sure to wear warm clothing as the summit gets pretty chilly.

The hike demands some amount of physical shape as there are quite a few winding roads and steep ascents.

1. Bats, Lakes, and Limestone at the Green Grotto Caves

These beautiful caverns are located on Jamaica’s North Coast between Ocho Rios and Montego Bay.

Consider a tour where the guide will narrate the history of these spectral caves once inhabited by the Arawak Indians, the settlers, and even smugglers.

Make sure to get pictures of the bats that dangle from the roofs of the caves – don’t use flash photography.

The stalactites, stalagmites, subterranean pools, and curious rock formations are definitely out of this world.

The tour ends with a surprise visit to a beautiful cave pool where you can toss in a coin and make a wish.

Tip: Wear a hard hat or helmet to prevent your head from bumping into the cave roof. Also, prepare to navigate slippery staircases and to bend a lot to avoid bumping your head.
